Three days? They were getting sloppy, and with Sojiro’s relentless declarations of how he’s ‘not their parent’, it was unlikely anyone was going to save them from adult-ly responsibilities. Though, if one were to ask any member of the police force or individual who had been helped by them, it would become clear that those responsibilities they had no trouble with. Saving people, solving puzzles (ones usually filled with murder) and making a livable income (ish) the two had no trouble diving into. However, keeping the fridge filled? The dishes clean? It was all so boring, and therefore, easy as hell to forget. [break][break]
The woman rose from her armchair, moving across the room to grasp her coat from its hanger. It was just long enough to reach her knees and had an almost comically large collar, which, though she wouldn’t admit it─ perfectly promoted the image she was looking for. A lone wolf detective! Of course, she wasn’t alone, but that was besides the point. Being a strictly lone detective was dull, and after a few years of trying her hand at it, had found it was completely unfruitful. No, things were much better with Ryuji at her side. He had a knack for seeing things she couldn’t, as well as keeping a situation calm when her head started spinning. Sure, he was also deeply rough around the edges and could be considered a ‘brawler’ but that actually came in useful, too. [break][break]

Improbable Deductions. Yes, they had taken the name and run with it─ even so much as to have snagged the URL and put it in the bio for all of her social media. But, that didn’t make Minako hate it any less. Improbable! There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that someone that had known them in highschool thought up the name and thought it would be clever, their one last chance to get back at the person who got out. The person who was beginning to make a name for themselves. Index finger clicked down on the mouse, refreshing their home page. They really should have come up with a better name for themselves; instead, there it was in a bright red, outlined in black to further accentuate it at the top of the page. Crimson hues shifted towards the window, slender fingers moving to pull back the drapes ever so slightly. Sapphire glinted against the darkness, the ripples of the river only illuminated by towering streetlights that ran along its edges. The sun had barely set and the world had already been rid of any light that wasn’t made by man. It might have been eerie to some, but the Fool found a soft comfort in it. The warm amber glow of streetlights, neon signs hanging in windows declaring, ‘don’t worry, we’re still open! The sun doesn’t control us!’ Of course, it didn’t say anything as silly as that, but that was no doubt what she took from them. Even so, it was nice. [break][break]
Perhaps it was a testament of how comfortable she had become in the Dark Hour, something that her soul knew far too well, but that her friends would never. They couldn’t understand what it was like; how the green tint signified a reason for her friends to stick around. A common goal was what kept them close, what kept them friends. Beneath her ribcage, her heart tightened at the idea of losing that goal. It was a terrible thing to wish. The Hour had caused so much pain and death, but within the crevices of her mind she struggled to let it go. It wouldn’t affect her fighting, or how she cursed Tartarus along with her friends, but the conflict open left her wide awake in the depths of the night. [break][break]
Crimson hues turned away from the streetlights, digits tightening around the small bag she held at her front. All day had been spent out, enjoying a cup of tea and studying for upcoming exams. She hadn’t even noticed the time when she left the library, and now found herself lost in thought beside the river. Minako’s head slowly shook, attempting to help her regain focus. Her brain must have still been within the books and far from her body. She turned on her heels, moving down the sidewalk towards the dorms, her gaze instantly finding familiar azure locks not far ahead of her. [break][break]
“Minato?” She called out, her pace quickening as she moved towards him. “Hey! What are you doing out so late?” As soon as the question left her lips she knew the subtle hypocrisy in the question, but chose not to make mention of that fact.

At the surface, her routine seemed perfectly fluid. Her arms and legs moved with a certain level of coordination, though without missing a beat to enjoy the moment. This was as close as she could get to mastering this song, and after just how many times she’d gone out and practiced─ the same moves over and over, burning them into her brain and cursing every mistake, it would have been shameful to have not gotten at least somewhat better. To begin with, Minako had no idea what to do on the stage in front of dozens of audience members. There were many dances where she would suffer their wrath, being ‘booed’ off the stage within the first minute, or even missing a landing and falling flat on her rear. Thankfully, it was just a dream so any damage wouldn’t be permanent. [break][break]
Both hands rose above her head, waving rapidly at the audience as their cheers and adoration flooded her ears. It felt nice, bringing a warm sensation to her cheeks. There was something truly amazing when under the spotlight, dancing with reckless abandon with no real consequences. Other than failure, of course, but even that didn’t weigh on her soul as she moved. She turned and exited the stage, giving a small high-five to Ken as he made his way in ahead of her. [break][break]
The moment the lights no longer gleamed against her skin, the roar of cheers no longer deafened the Fool, exhaustion settled into her bones. It wasn’t drastic, but enough to make her shoulders slump and her muscles ease. Crimson orbs focused on the path towards her room, but was stopped before she even had a chance. A frown might have begun to curve her lips, but hues locking with her senpais quickly shifted to a smile. Come to think of it, she hadn’t really gotten the chance to speak with Mitsuru since the dream began. Minako had dove in head first to the wondrous world of dancing, and failed to see her superior in the practice area or on stage. [break][break]
Lips parted to greet her, but fell short before the woman began talking. The Fool’s head tilted to the side, brows tightened together once the question had met its conclusion. “Understanding how to dance? I’m not sure I know what you mean, senpai.” Gaze drifted down to the notebook held tightly in her clutches and some of the puzzle began to piece itself together before her very eyes. “Have the others been giving you notes? What have they said?”

There wasn’t a doubt about whether or not she recognized the strange light, it had appeared in her journey time after time, and she had grown into the assumption that it was connected to the mystical room that plagued her dreams. The Velvet Room, where Igor and Elizabeth aided in her journey through the reality of the Dark Hour, and made her feel both on edge and comfortable at the same time. It was a difficult thing to describe, something only another Wildcard would even begin to imagine. Not that any others existed; she was entirely alone in the world with a gift that had kept her and her friends alive… well… most of them. [break][break]
Had she been able to feel her form as it drifted through the abyssal space, droplets may have begun to form in the inner corners of her eyes, fists might have clenched at her sides. However, there was nothing. Though it only lasted a few moments, it felt to be an eternity of waiting, of wondering. It must have been a dream! A dream where Minako couldn’t feel, couldn’t parse through the miasma of her thoughts, and couldn’t see anything besides black.[break][break]
Feeling regained, eyelids falling shut before opening to a world beyond her own comprehension. Crimson hues scanned her surroundings; it was like the Dark Hour, but not exactly. The entire world coated in the sickly-green tint she so recognized, the moon too pale to be golden but not quite its natural hue either. That was all to be expected, what wasn’t were the skewers of bone and flesh sprouted from the earth, breaking roads in two, tearing through the insides of buildings, and almost… breathing. No, pulsating─ the flesh that clung to parts of the bone twitched like nothing she had ever seen before, sending a wave of nausea to her stomach. [break][break]
Don’t puke. Despite how her abdomen threatened to spill its contents, there wasn’t any time to lose her guts. A figure composed of darkness, a shadow, slithered through the cracks in the pavement, gaining in speed until it sprouted from the ground and knocked the Fool onto her backside. Its eerie groans had shifted to chuckles as elongated hands reached out to grab her. “Thanatos, come!” digits reached to the holster at her hip to grasp at the air that should have been her standardized S.E.E.S weapon. In a moment of adrenaline and panic, hands found a piece of a broken streetlight, crashing the metal pole into the shadow’s abdomen before making a run for it. Whether it was dead or not didn’t matter, she had to get out of here and fast. [break][break]
It only took a second to hear the sound of bullets hailing in the distance. Aegis, it had to be! Right? She was the only one she knew who could have unleashed so many bullets at once. Unless of course, it was a complete stranger. There wasn’t enough time to contemplate whether or not it was the right decision, her legs began making the sprint towards the sounds as quickly as she was capable. It wasn’t long before she heard the name she had been hoping for and spotted the blonde locks.[break] [break]

Lips formed into a smile as she halted mere feet away from the Aeon. Even being such a short sprint, her chest rose and fell in quick succession as she attempted to retrieve her breath. “I-I’m so glad you’re here!” A pause followed, her smile fading as quickly as it had appeared. “Where is here, Aegis?”

Had she had the energy left, her eyes would have squeezed shut, arms would have reached over her head to protect the most vulnerable part of the human body. But they didn’t, she made no attempt to protect herself, and luckily─ she hadn’t needed to. Cool metal pressed against her cheek as her form was halted in midair. Aegis. Who else could have rushed to her aid so quickly? Who else was made of wires and metal as opposed to flesh and bone? Trick question, there wasn’t anyone else. [break][break]
Eyelids slowly rose and fell, though never opening more than a sliver as she gazed up at the golden-haired android. They were moving through the darkness, that much was sure. But to where, she couldn’t discern nor did she particularly try to. If her mind could have found the will to focus, Minako might have found being carried around like a doll embarrassing. She was fine, just tired; the fight had just been particularly grueling, that’s all. She would have said all of that and continued on for several minutes, attempting to dissuade her friends from worry over her state. Her gifts were so lovely, so powerful─ the ability to wield multiple personas! It was something unheard of, something that gave them all an edge in battle. But in truth, it wasn’t as easy as she attempted to make it seem. Casting out persona after persona, accessing different parts of her soul for the perfect weapon… it was getting tougher, but those words would never leave her lips.

For only a moment she drifted off, crimsons widening and form tensing as she was propped upwards in the kitchen chair. Even the tiniest bit of rest granted her the strength to raise her arm, digits moving to rub into the back of her neck as her gaze found the other. Even though she was a machine, seeing the intensity and precision she used rushing through the cabinets was awe-inspiring. To anyone who hadn’t lived with her, it would have looked like sheer chaos, but somehow Minako found something tender in the action. Perhaps it was just because Aegis was going to such lengths for her, but she had a feeling the action would have felt generous and loving no matter who it was towards. That’s just who she was.

The cup being sat on the wood table before her snapped her out of the haze of admiration that had bubbled in her brain watching the Aeon work. Digits shifted from their position, each individual finger slightly trembling as she reached towards the mug. She attempted to comically shake her hands, exaggerating her actions as if it was a joke of some sort, as if she was okay. Finally, she grasped the mug, the warmth instantly sending a soft smile to her features as she lifted it to her lips. The scent of cocoa instantly filled her nostrils, bringing forth a feeling she couldn’t find in her memory but somehow recognized: being wrapped up in blankets with hot chocolate in a room with a gentle chill, the multicolored lights of the Christmas tree being the only thing to light up the room.

With a small tip, the liquid rushed across her tongue and eased every muscle in her body. History has shown you will feel better after drinking this. History had a true sense of humor about when it chooses to be right and wrong, luckily this time it was right. She wasn’t anywhere near 100%, but the only thing that would get her there was sleep, and the idea of going to sleep alone up in that room made her knuckles bare white against the cup. It wasn’t time to sleep, not yet.

Warm rays pressed against cream-colored curtains, threatening to burst at any moment and drench the room in its light. That was the first thing Minako noticed as she pushed open the door to her suite. Well, not her suite exactly, one she would be sharing with… digits fumbled around the purse that hung off her elbow. Wallet, chapstick, sunscreen, yes, yes, but where is the─ aha! Fingers clasped the folded paper, pulling it from its confinement and reading the name once again. Akira Kurusu. There was one hundred percent, not a single doubt in her mind that it was going to be a male walking through that door, and that idea had her stomach tying itself into knots. Even back home, where she lived in a dorm with several men, the gender dynamics never really occurred to the girl. They all had their own rooms and they were her family more than anything. She quickly tucked the paper away in the pocket of her shorts, pulling the (thankfully) rolling luggage behind her as she made her way further into the suite. It was big, larger than she had ever anticipated for something that had come to her for free. The room came with a decently sized bathroom, equipped with a bathtub-shower hybrid and plenty of fresh towels, a small kitchen space that came with a mini fridge already loaded to the brim with waters, a coffee maker, and a microwave, which definitely made her second guess not bringing any food. Past the kitchen there was a living space with a white loveseat and a smaller chair surrounding a low coffee table. Finally, into the bedroom, the part that really made her stomach drop. Digits clutched her bag, knuckles baring themselves in a painful white as she moved past the couches.[break][break]
Relief flooded her system, fingers loosening their grip and each one of her muscles relaxing in an instant. Two full-sized beds not at all close together, and with that she had been saved. Well, not fully saved quite yet. She still had to meet her mysterious roommate, and possibly question Mitsuru or Yukari on how they somehow managed to get paired with someone of the same gender and she didn’t. At least she hadn’t been put up in the Honeymoon Suite, that would have just been the icing on the cake. [break][break]
It only took a few minutes to unpack her things, stuffing them into the dresser nearest to her bed and drawing the curtains allowing the room to fill with amber. The gentle warmth on her skin bringing a smile to her features. No matter what happened or who this Kurusu was, this vacation was going to be amazing. Once more, she grabbed the dossier from her pocket, crimson hues scanning over the schedule for today. “Lunch doesn’t start until 11:00…?” A soft groan fell from her lips and her stomach made a sound to match it. Her opposite hand grasped the phone she’d rested on the side table, gaze instantly locking on the time. 8:50. Well, there wasn’t much to do besides wait for her roommate and make proper introductions. With that, she kicked off her sneakers and plopped down on the edge of the bed.

Crimson lit up as if tiny sparks danced across her gaze at the acceptance of her request. Well, less acceptance than a dispassionate I suppose─ but it would suit the Fool well enough! The woman abruptly turned on her heels, making her way towards a closet door that would have been easily overlooked by any who didn't know it was there. The wood of the door matched the wall surrounding it perfectly, only the petite brass handle sticking out gave its location away. Digits outstretched to twist the handle and gently tug the door open.

Not to mention it was significantly more enjoyable than burying her head in a book and studying under the dim lighting of a restaurant for hours. "Plus," a devious smile curled her lips as she reached into the closet, digits quickly finding and grasping the handles of two bamboo katanas meant solely for practice. Pulling both into her arms, she stepped back and shut the closet door. "She couldn't possibly be mad at us if we're not using real weapons, right?"
