Detective Shirogane Naoto. The name felt familiar, like she had heard it in passing or maybe on the news? She wasn’t sure, honestly there probably wasn’t any correlation and her desperate brain was trying to make connections to ground her, to connect her to this person so that maybe they really could find Minato. She swallowed back, several long blinks following before her brain could settle, the questions having been swarming around like bees after pollen. It had tried to take her back to the moment she realized he wasn’t coming home, to the last time she’d seen his face. It hurt. Just give your name, that’s a good start. She cleared her throat. “My name is Minako Arisato. My brother’s name is Minato, he, uh…” [break][break]
Even with everything going on her mind clung to her lighthearted nature, wanting to make a joke about how similar their names were or give anything to make the situation easier. But she held them back, knowing it wouldn’t do anything really, as well as not wanting to waste the time of the Detective. She took in a quick breath, going through the questions again and attempting to come up with something cohesive, something helpful. [break][break]
“He goes off on his own all the time, he’s always been a loner. He likes to study by himself, so I guess that’s where I assumed he was going when he left school that day. T-That’s where I saw him last, we were both leaving school and went our separate ways. We usually do, so it wasn’t unusual. He didn’t seem unhappy or upset or anything, everything seemed so normal.” [break][break]
Her tone emphasized the word, slight frustration spilling from it. Part of her wanted to blame herself, that she should have realized something was off and gone with him. But nothing was off. Replaying that moment over and over in her mind, it was something they did every day. A wave, and then off in different directions. Him telling her to stay out of trouble, like he always did. Maybe she should have told him to stay out of trouble, too… [break][break]
Tears pricked the corners of her gaze once more, threatening to slip down her cheeks no matter how hard she tried to hold them back. She should have done something, she should have gone with him. And now… now he was gone, and the Fool couldn’t even stop herself from crying.

A bad start, to say the least. The woman’s breath came back in mere seconds, despite how her heart still bashed against her ribcage. This place was… wrong. It was a world far removed from any her or the other members of S.E.E.S had seen before, even the way the air settled in her lungs feeling foreign. They had to get out of here, that had to be step one. No, that was step two. Step one had to be figure out if any of their friends had landed here as well. It wouldn’t have made sense for just Minako and Aegis to have been displaced… right? Nothing made sense. That seemed to be the thought that prevailed in her mind, casting away the others. Nothing made sense. [break][break]
Confusion, anxiety, and a mess of thoughts prevented her from realizing when she was being pushed behind the android. Her head shook, several blinks following as she attempted to regain focus. Now wasn’t the time to fall into a daze, now was the time to survive. At the very least, this world was filled with Shadows just like the ones from the Dark Hour, all of whom would love to tear them in half. Ruby hues shifted across the Aeon’s form before brows pulled together, taking in every spurt of information she gave. There were others here, ‘varied’ could have meant anything so she didn’t bother trying to figure it out. Find a weapon. Yes, that much she could understand and work with. She began away from the AI when she spoke out again. [break][break]

Minako couldn’t hide the twinge of disgust in her tone at the proposition of ripping off a piece of her to use as a melee weapon. This was a desperate time, but not that desperate! She didn’t wait for a response, taking several steps away from the other to grasp an overturned pole that only had the remnants of a sign still attached. It would work for now; hell, it had worked for five minutes ago. Grasping the cold metal in her fists, she turned back to find a face she didn’t recognize; someone who couldn’t have been much older than she was. An inhabitant of this world? Or maybe… someone who didn’t belong, like they didn’t? Gaze caught Aegis’ guns shifting back to digits, a clear sign that their threat signal was low. [break][break]
Lips parted, prepared to call out to the new face, praying they might have some sort of answer. But the words didn’t come out, instead being pulled back to the blonde. Yes, they needed a strategy. An attempt to focus, but she couldn’t; gaze shifting back to the messy haired boy in the distance. Who was he? His attention seemed to have slid elsewhere, to voices that she couldn’t parse through. This was their chance. They had been dropped in an entirely new world and searching solely for their friends could have taken days on their own. [break][break]
“V-Voices, I choose voices.” [break][break]
The order came out as a stutter before settling into itself, an arm grasping Aegis’ in a gentle reassurance before she took off in a jog towards the unknown. He was taller than her, messy black hair and a look of confusion across his face, which probably matched her own. [break][break]
“H-Hey! We don’t mean you any harm, is this your world? I’m sorry, I’m Minako, and this is my friend Aegis. We’re lost, if you know anything we could really use your help.”

As per usual, he was right. In no time at all the scores would be plastered all across the school and not God himself could have stopped senpai from checking on the scores of every member of the dorm. It was an admirable task for her to take up (…well, sort of). Anyway, lips pursed together blowing a quick raspberry in response to his comment, followed by a small shrug. If this was to be the way Minako perished, let it be with dignity! At least, more than she would have had by whimpering and begging for Kirijo’s forgiveness. [break][break]
It took several moments for the Fool to rise from her thoughts and take in exactly what was being asked of her. Could they rely on them? Could they? She couldn’t help but notice the way his gaze left her own, as if he could have somehow been ashamed for the words leaving his lips. It was a fair worry, even she had to admit that. When they had first arrived, it was difficult to know who was safe to allow into her heart and who would have her back through the end of time. That was then, though. Things were different now; it wasn’t just about friendship or loyalty, it was about saving the world from the Dark Hour. The mission that this new scenery had allotted them was worth more than gold, and she found solace in it even more than the trust of her friends. [break][break]
Minato was taller than her, only by a couple inches, but still, it was a strain on her calves to lean upwards, pulling the male into a hug. As close as they were, affection had always been a complication for them. He was stoic and always maintained a cold outer shell, it’s true she saw less of it than most, but it was still there. There wasn’t blame to be had about it, though, it just was, the same way the sun rose and set every day. The redhead didn’t test her luck by lingering in the embrace, pulling back and regaining her composure beside him. Part of her wanted to demand he meet her gaze, maybe even pull him to, but she didn’t. [break][break]
“I don’t think it’s a stupid thing to say, or even to worry about. But, at the end of it all I do trust them, Minato. I don’t think they’d fight so hard beside us if they weren’t in it for real, if that makes sense. I don’t know─”[break][break]
A hand waved in front of her face, as if trying to brush away any falsities in her statements. The gesture was small and playful, but her features wrinkled into a more serious demeanor to preface her next sentence. [break][break]
“Even if things go sour and it turns out they weren’t who we thought they were, we’ll always have each other. I hope you find some comfort in that, I know I do.”

How the game will be played: Once an hour during the event, a vote will take place to find the traitor, they will send their votes into the admins/moderators and the two will go head to head in a challenge, using their wit to solve puzzles and riddles, while keeping a look out for any clues in the environment. The punishments of each challenge will be different, some involving spilling their secrets or involving another death, but by the end there will be one winner and one loser. Every guest will partake in a challenge, and by the end there will only be two left: the innocent and the traitor. If the traitor is killed off before then, their mantle will be passed onto another still among the group, to ensure they will survive until the end. Keep your secret close to your heart, lest your survival be all for naught.

The motion startled Minako; her weight being shifted completely, face held in between metallic palms as she was positioned perfectly to stare into sapphires. A thousand different times she had stared into those optics, whether in awe or curiosity or admiration. Somehow, this was different. Not once had the Aeon put them in such a situation, where the had no choice but to face one another, to be vulnerable in some way. Her cheeks grew warm, pink dusting them as she attempted to avert her gaze. Upwards, towards the blonde locks she had often imagined running her hands through. What would she feel underneath? Was the top of her head as cold as her digits, or would it have almost deceived her? Orbs didn’t linger there, instead shifting down to the pale lips that felt like home. No matter what, she knew the words that left her mouth would never hold hatred, would never hold the kind of sentiment that could break her heart; that was comforting. [break][break]
When they begun to move, scarlets found their way back to the ocean held within her gaze. Something about this closeness, about feeling her on either side of her face overwhelmed the young woman. Was she reading too much into this? Her mind conjured up ideas of shows she’d seen where this kind of action prefaced a kiss. Though if history was to show anything, that kiss would land directly on her forehead. Not that she had ever minded that show of affection, but it had left her confused in the past. Still, she couldn’t help but respond with hope laced through her tone. “What would it be called, Aegis?” Her words were barely above a whisper, even without shifting her gaze down feeling the gap between them diminishing every second that passed. Their faces just a second apart now, Minako’s lips parting, ready to close her eyes and accept the kiss. Accept Aegis, for everything that she was and everything that she wasn’t. Eyelids began to fall. How badly had she craved this? Before now, she might have rated it a two or three on a scale of ten, but now… the way her heartbeat was racing beneath her chest, the way her skin burned beneath her fingertips. [break][break]
The flap of the doggy door was the sound of her undoing, Koromaru’s small bark being the final nail in the coffin. It was involuntary, the soft whimper that escaped parted lips as Aegis spoke again, ignoring the moment they shared and talking once again about her needed apology. Of course she needed to apologize, yes, but… now? The chair scooted away from her, and that was that. Was it anger that made her gaze glisten with droplets on the precipice of slipping down her cheeks. Digits rose to quickly brush them away, giving the robot a small nod before she, too, rose from the chair and made her way towards the front door. [break][break]
First to greet her was sweet Koromaru, offering a gentle bark and gazing up at her with a look of pure affection. How wonderful it must have been to be a dog, though─ she was fooling herself with such naivety, things hadn’t been easy for Koromaru either. The woman leaned down, gently rubbing behind his ears, to which he closed his eyes and leaned into the touch. It was enough to calm her nerves and soothe the fire that rested in her stomach. It only took a few minutes for the rest to follow in behind, each one showing their concerns, but clearly too exhausted to condemn her too harshly. [break][break]
“I-I’m sorry for letting you all down back there, and I know I have been a lot recently. The Dark Hour has taken a lot out of me these past few trips, but I promise from now on I’ll know when to back off and let someone else take the lead. I think that’s my biggest problem and why I use up so much of my energy. Please forgive me if you can.” [break][break]
With that, she offered a small bow of her head and received a lecture from Akihiko, though he was as weary as everyone else and gave her the order to rest up. For that she was thankful, wishing each of them a good night and even giving Yukari a small hug. They were worried, and they had every right to be. They were more than her friends, they were her family; but all Minako could think about was the team member that now awaited her in her room. [break][break]
Heart heavy and brain swirling with a million thoughts that she couldn’t even begin to comprehend, the woman made her way up the stairs and down the hallway, only hesitating when she finally reached the door. It was a portal, a portal into a world in which she wasn’t sure what was real and what she had built up in her head. All the time she had spent with the AI, every moment they had been a little closer than friends would have been. Maybe she had read into it, after all it was in her wires to protect the Fool at all costs, so maybe that explained why she acted as she did. Still, that didn’t explain the almost-could-have-been-kiss. Replaying it over and over in her mind, there was no doubt that’s what it was, even Minako couldn’t misinterpret that. [break][break]
She took in a deep breath, filling her lungs to capacity and holding it before exhaling. It was a trick some adult somewhere had offered to her after that night on the bridge, but she hadn’t used it until now. A hand grasped the door handle, turning it and making her way into the room.

Vermilion-tinted hues rolled at the declaration. “Ah, a million dollars? Something tells me it wouldn’t last in your completely capable hands.” A giggle tickled the back of her throat, slipping out in small spurts throughout her sentence. It must have been cumbersome always worrying about their money and feeling desperation for more. Minako wasn’t in this business for the paycheck; often times she’d even completely forget to pick up their payment altogether, leaving it to Ryuji to keep a roof over their head and food in their bellies. The rumble in her stomach indicated once more that maybe he needed some assistance on that last front. “Can we ─” Her sentence was cut off as quickly as it began by her gaze fixating on the tiny relic in the palm of her partner’s hand.[break][break]
Luckily, the Fool’s stomach promptly got the memo and buried her more human requirements deep down for the time being. She’d eat… but later; now, now was too important. The game was on, she could sense it like a canine feeling an earthquake about to tear through their home. She moved closer to him, slowly, careful not to disturb his own observations. It only took a few moments before the object was placed in her hands, digits guided to close around it. For what reason, she wasn’t quite sure. How was she to properly examine it from beneath the shadows of her fingers? Oh well, that didn’t really matter. Fingers pulled back, revealing a small USB stick, the side facing up a dark red with nothing out of the ordinary. [break][break]

Eyes widened, quickly moving to flip the stick to its opposite side and pull it towards her face. He was right, as clear as day ‘M’ was carved into it. Carved was a generous word, as whomever had begun the job clearly didn’t have the time to finish. Beside the first letter was half of an ‘A’ which could have meant a thousand things. But to end up in Ryuji’s wallet? It had to be directed to her. Either that, or he stole a random USB the last time they were out, and she kind of doubted that one. [break][break]
“This was 100% carved by a woman, the strokes indicate someone with small hands so either a woman or a child. Okay, so 50% but a woman is more likely, a child’s hands would be too flimsy to do something this delicate. You can tell they cared about keeping the contents of this stick safe, otherwise they might have pressed harder. We have no idea where this really came from, do we?” [break][break]
Head cocked to the side as she lowered the stick from her line of sight, adjusting to just how quickly her partner had plopped down with his laptop. “Go ahead, put it in! We might have a real case here!” With that, she handed back the stick and leaned over his shoulder, resting her chin in the crook of his neck.

The sound of another voice ringing in her ears caused her form to jolt upwards, head rising from her lap and hands rushing to wipe away the tears that had stained her cheeks. At this point, there was no hiding the redness that puffed her features, digits rubbing at the raw skin only agitating it further. Ruby hues rose, finding the owner of the voice pretty instantly. They looked familiar, but not enough so that a name screamed out at her or a memory crept into her mind. Hues scanned over their face, taking in their androgynous features and coming up just as clueless as ever. Who were they? For a moment, the frustration of that question took her misery from her, but it only lasted a moment. Without a definitive answer in her mind, she settled on the idea that it must have been at school. Hands fell back to her lap, as the rubbing began to string the skin around her eyes. Surely, she didn’t have any more tears left to spill. [break][break]

Shatter within her chest and take her from this world? It really felt like it could. Go on, tell them. Nobody can help if you refuse to ask for it. The voice of her dark-haired brother rang in her mind and of course, he was right. He was always right, ever since they were little. Minato had always been quiet, choosing carefully when to speak and what to say, the redhead had always had a hunch it was so planned out to ensure he was never wrong. Another sniffle sounded through her nose as she braced herself to continue her sentence. [break][break]
“I spoke to the officer at the window; my twin brother went missing… he uh, he’s only been gone for 40 hours but I know something is wrong. I can feel it in my soul, if you believe in stuff like that.” [break][break]
A ghost of a smile lifted her face for a moment, a false gesture of her usual polite nature that now she couldn’t bring herself to do. There wasn’t time for etiquette, there wasn’t time for anything other than searching for Minato. [break][break]
The Fool rose from the chair, moving across the room towards a box whose very last tissue sat at the bottom of the cardboard, completely out of sight to anyone not desperate. She delicately pulled the sheet out, raising it to her face and blowing her nose. God, she always hated how snotty of a crier she was, but that’s how things were, how they had always been. She tossed it into the bin before turning back to face the other. [break][break]

Whether she looked like she was thinking or that was merely how it was perceived, she wasn’t sure, but what she was sure of was that something was processing through her wires, something inside her metal form was working overtime. But maybe it was wrong. Why? Because Aegis was a robot? That seemed like bullshit. Her thoughts swirled and swirled, two thoughts morphing into a thousand as they branched out and tortured her with anxiety. The moments that passed next seemed to take forever as the blonde moved towards her. For some reason she feared it might have been a hostile movement; but she was wrong, like usual. [break][break]
The confidant sat in the seat beside her and took her hand once more. An audible sigh of relief slipped through the Fool’s lips as she offered another squeeze to her metallic fingers. Even if her touch was chilled, even if Aegis wasn’t human like everybody else, she cherished this moment more than she could bear to admit. Embarrassment, that’s the feeling that arose as she squeezed the hand. Pink tinted porcelain cheeks as she leaned over, gently leaning her head against the other’s. Her weight fell reliant on her as she leaned, hoping Aegis didn’t mind too much. She was always picking Minako up, always looking after her… how lucky the redhead was that they had found each other. Don’t panic. It was too late, pink lips parted as a scream erupted from the depths of her throat. Caramel hues stared back at the figure that didn’t belong. Ginger locks had gone brunette, eyes shifting to brown and… well, everything else being wrong. Digits rose to poke her porcelain cheeks, tugging at the skin as if maybe it was a mask of some sort or a hallucination. No such luck, the woman that stared back at her in the mirror was Yukari Takeba. [break][break]
Okay, retrace your steps, Minako! The woman began pacing around the unfamiliar room, “I went to bed as Minako, 100% I’m sure of that. I went to bed in my own bed with my own face and my own─ my own everything!” Even the voice that passed through her lips felt foreign. It didn’t sound like Yukari, though that must have just been because she was hearing it through her own bones. A curiosity peaked in her brain at what her own voice would sound like from a third-party perspective. [break][break]
Wait, where was her body? The Fool gulped, rushing towards the closet to grasp one of her normal outfits: the pink pinstriped blazer and skirt that was a little too short for her comfort. With that, she turned on her heels and rushed out into the hallway. In truth, she should have had a plan of attack. For instance, what to say when running into her fellow members of SEES when they saw her, was she supposed to pretend nothing had happened? Act like Yukari? That was a bit of a tall order, but maybe she could handle it. [break][break]
Regardless, she had to find her body and fast.

There wasn’t any way to deny the tightness that had formed in her chest─ the muscles of her heart pulling in a thousand different directions, desperate to break the very seams that made her who she was. Finally allowing that weight to slip from her lips, to admit not just to Aegis, but to herself exactly why she was so scared to be honest with her friends. Thoughts fell back to a time right after she lost her mother… that terrible night on the bridge that she could only summon fragments of. After that night anyone who had gazed upon Minako had only seen one thing: a wounded animal. An orphan, a poor pathetic girl with no one to care for her. The embodiment of grief and loss and agony all wrapped into one slender-framed ginger girl from nowhere. After that, after having the opportunity to join SEES and be something greater than all of that, she swore she would never let someone look at her that way again. [break][break]
Thankfully, Aegis wasn’t a human. Emotions didn’t blind the aeon, nor did they wrinkle the features on her face. When ruby orbs rose to meet their sapphire counterpart, the gaze was as blank and unwavering as ever. It should have hurt, seeing how the machine couldn’t produce emotions when tears spilled down her own cheeks. It should have made the girl feel a lot of things, but instead she found some comfort in it. Everything about Aegis had been a mystery since their first meeting, she was a robot, but she was so much more than that. But even still, she wasn’t a human, she didn’t have the wires to be one. Maybe, in a weird, fucked-up cosmic sense, the two of them were meant for each other. One who couldn’t feel, who couldn’t process the humans that they were surrounded by but tried so desperately to; and another who felt far too much but couldn’t bring themselves to ask for help. Was Aegis even capable of want? Yes. No. Maybe? The logistics didn’t matter, even as simple as the sentiment was it brought pink lips to curl upwards at their edges, albeit ever so slightly. Someday Minako’s story would be over, someday the Fool would transcend into the World and she would no longer be of use to the earth. Whether by tragedy or old age, she wouldn’t last forever. Not like Aegis. But that wasn’t important, not now anyway. What would it do to bring up something like that? They both knew the truth of the world, the one thing that would never change for all of humanity, so why would she bring it up now? She wouldn’t, instead digits would lift from her lap, reaching across the table to take the metallic hang in her own, gently squeezing it. [break][break]
“I’m not going anywhere, Aegis. Not today, not tomorrow, not for a long time. Every moment I have on this Earth belongs to you, okay? I can’t give you more than that, even if I wish I could. But it’s not about forever. Forever is a bad way to think about things. It’s about making every moment count while we’re both together. Does that make sense?”

A small knock against the wooden door pulled the woman’s attention from her thoughts, ruby hues shifting to see her roommate emerge from the hallway. Akira Kurusu: a male, just as she had expected. Though, any worry or butterflies had fleeted from her at the sight of him. No one who would have posed a problem would have such a kind face, nor would they have completely disregarded their peculiar situation instead simply offering a welcome. Relief washed over her features, pink lips pulling into a warm smile as she reached forward to take his hand, giving it a loose shake. Not too firm, obviously, she didn’t want to scare the boy off with her Dark Hour muscles. [break][break]
“It’s nice to meet you too, Akira. Feel free to call me Minako!” [break][break]
Normally, the Fool might have found it strange to instantly call the other by their first name. It was clear he was a at least a year her senior, so ‘senpai’ might have made more sense, but the thought to question such things didn’t even float into her mind. Perhaps he reminded her of someone, he did have a warm glow about him, the kind that she had no doubt dragged in all sorts of people from all walks of life. [break][break]
A soft chuckle fell from her lips as she nodded in response, “I couldn’t help it, the bed next to the window is always the best one!” Whether or not that was true was up for debate, but it did allow her to soak in the sunlight like a cat after a long day of chasing mice and… doing whatever cats do. It was a bad analogy, thank goodness she hadn’t said it out loud and had to admit that she knew nothing about cats and was still, in fact, a little heartbroken that they couldn’t bring Koromaru along with them for this trip. Her gaze found its way back to the man as his question filled the air: what was she most excited for? Even if it only had been twenty or so minutes since she looked over their roster for the day, she had already forgotten everything except for lunch. Which was still hours away. Crimsons scanned the list of activities as he continued on, even the mere mention of the eating contest sending her stomach signals to growl as obnoxiously as possible. In an attempt to detract from that embarrassment, an awkward giggle followed as her gaze rose to him once more. [break][break]
Even if she hadn’t been desperately trying to ignore the timing of her digestive system, there was no denying how impressive it was to hold the record at one of the ‘Big Bang’ restraunts. On a couple occasions she’d seen the 2nd tier of hamburger and it was almost as big as her whole body! A bit of an exaggeration, but just a bit. “Really? Wow, I don’t know how you fit all that into your stomach! What kind of reward do you get for something like that? Or maybe bragging rights is its own reward?” [break][break]
Her head cocked to the side in question, leaning in as if the wait for more details was excruciating. Only then did she realize she’d failed to answer his question: what was she most excited for? It was a toss-up, everything listed sounded like a whirlwind of fun, or the perfect relaxation. Man, had they gotten lucky or what? [break][break]
“I gotta say I’m really looking forward to the sandcastle competition and making smores by the campfire! I’ve never built a proper sandcastle before, I bet it’s going to be so fun. And smores, ugh! I’m hungry just thinking about them.”

Knuckles bared white as fists clenched harder into themselves; why didn’t they care? Didn’t they understand that a man was missing? Had she been someone else, fists might have crashed against the glass that separated her from the police officer. Screams might have left her lips, her voice may have cried out until the only thing left was a raspy whisper. If she was someone else, they might have cared enough to look into her case. Another teenager having gone missing, the fact that it was her brother didn’t seem to change their tune at all. ‘He’s probably just letting off some steam.’ ‘It hasn’t even been 48 hours.’ ‘You really worry too much, teenage boys are unpredictable.’ She’d heard it all before, plus numerous other comments that had left her mind as quickly as they had entered. Rubies shifted across the face of the officer as she forced her fists to loosen at her sides. He wouldn’t listen, he didn’t care.. but she had to try. [break][break]
“S-Sir,” she paused for a moment, half-expecting him to continue fixating on the computer screen to his left, but to her surprise, his gaze found hers. “I know I was just here a few hours ago, but it’s about to be 40 hours since I’ve seen my brother. I’d like to file a missing person’s report, and for a case to be opened about him.” The stammer that had first left her lips completely faded, a subtle confidence ringing through her words as brows pulled together, wrinkling her forehead. His digits moved upwards, rubbing the skin of his forehead as his gaze fell, shifting through the papers on his desk. It was a mess from what she could see from behind the glass that probably hadn’t been cleaned in months. Papers littered the desk in stacks that looked to be on the brink of falling over, but somehow it only took him a few moments to procure the one he was looking for. His fingers moved, slipping the paper through the small slit at the bottom of the glass. [break][break]
“Fill this out in 8 hours if you still haven’t heard from him, okay?” [break][break]
Minako nodded, hands quickly moving to grab the sheet and stuff it into her bag. 8 hours, okay. She could wait that long, or maybe Minato would turn up before then and everything would be alright. A dull pang in her stomach signaled the likelihood of that occurrence, but she attempted to ignore it as she turned and sat down on one of the metal chairs in the waiting area. Everything will be okay. The words repeated over and over, rattling around her mind like a prayer. Everything will be okay. It has to be. No matter how many times the assurance came, it didn’t stop droplets from forming in the corner of hues, nor did it stop them slipping down her cheeks and staining her skin. [break][break]
The Fool’s head bowed, falling towards her knees as her arms moved to cover her head. Without Minato, she had nothing; no, more than that… she was nothing. If it hadn’t been for him, when their mother died that fateful night, she would have been taken away into child services and never seen him again. The Aeon rose without a single word, slipping back into the kitchen with a face as hard as stone. She was an android, a fact that even Minako occasionally forgot through everything. A machine, made of wires and steel, basically just an over-complicated toaster. It would have been easy if the Fool had seen things that way, but she didn’t. Muscles began to tie themselves into knots in her chest, in her lungs, her breaths growing shorter as she strained to calm herself. Was something really wrong with her? No, the droplets forming in the inner corners of her gaze proved exactly what it was. Why hadn’t she said anything? Cracked a smile? All she had to do was say something.[break][break]
Fingers grasped the mug, pulling it to her lips once more and taking a large gulp. The warmth soothed her form, even quieted the worry that had begun building in her brain like static. Aegis was a robot; she didn’t have to smile, she didn’t have to speak. It wasn’t anything, it was just the way she was programmed. The thoughts quelled her own as she took another sip before lowering the mug, setting it on the table before her. It was nothing. [break][break]
Rubies rose to the gentle sound of her hooves finding their way back towards the other. Lips pulled into a gentle smile at the sight of her, only to fall into a line as words began to fill the air between them. For the calculated, repetitive nature of it. Chest tightened, hands instinctively falling beneath the table to rest in her lap, as if she had something to hide. There was no hiding, though; the shame overtook her features like a Halloween mask. Was it really so noticeable? Minako was sure she had hid the struggle from her fellow S.E.E.S, she had put on a brave smile and pushed through everything for them. This was the first and the only time she would ever collapse like that. Didn’t Aegis realize that? [break][break]
Lips parted, an excuse rising in her throat. A defense, something to make the Aeon understand that this was just a bad night, nothing special. Of course, of course she would apologize to her friends. It wasn’t responsible of her to use all her energy like that, she should have been smarter and conserved more before the big fight. It was a learning experience, nothing more. The words caught in her throat, Aegis’ taking over once again. If the last sentence had been a push, this one was a punch to her gut. Is life light? Of course not. Life was dark, it was full of pain and suffering and Minako knew that just as well as anyone. Hell, any member of S.E.E.S knew just how painful and horrible it was to exist. [break][break]
Teeth bared behind lips, brows pulling together as the words continued to singe her skin. It was almost impossible not to cut her off, to yell and raise from her chair. That wasn’t like her though, and no matter how wrong Aegis was, she had every right to feel this way. It was wrong for Minako to pretend that these nights weren’t leaving her exhausted and on the brink, it was wrong to lie to her teammates. But it wasn’t for a lack of caring, if anything, it was an overabundance of caring that caused her lips to stay shut. [break][break]
Gaze fell back to the cup, steam quietly rising from the liquid, the cup only half full now. Watching the steam was the only thing that kept her voice from raising, fists from flying. This rage was new, it was something she hadn’t experienced since she was a child. “I still mourn for him, Aegis. You think I don’t care, and that’s why I hide my battle scars, that’s why I brush off my exhaustion and put on a brave face. It’s the complete opposite. Maybe everyone would mourn for me if I was to die too, maybe they wouldn’t; but I know damn well that if they knew how hard this was getting for me, they would worry.
